Granville has been different since it was founded in 1805 by a company of New Englanders who had grown tired of trying to make a living on their rocky hill-farms in western Massachusetts. There was nothing haphazard about their migration or settlement: they even knew how wide the streets were to be before they had seen the town plat. This is their story as told by William T. Utter. Utter knew more about Granville than would appear in this book, for he had served as Justice of the Peace and as Mayor of the Village; he also sat on benches along Broadway and listened.
