A Letter from the Membership Chair

Dear prospective new member,

It is my great pleasure to invite you to become a member of the Granville Historical society, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting its rich history. We are housed in the Granville Historical Museum, located at 115 East Broadway in the beautiful downtown area. With Granville's Bicentennial having occurred in 2005, this is a particularly exciting time to be involved in the celebration of our history; and we welcome your participation in any of our ongoing projects.

Our docents open the Museum Saturdays and Sundays (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.) from mid-April to mid-October or by appointment. Tours are scheduled for school groups, scouts, and others who ask. Our collections include pioneer objects brought by the original settlers, as well as objects made and used in Granville.

Our rich archives document Granville's history. We hold the original documents of the Licking Company (which founded Granville), non-current records of the Village of Granville, and many personal and family papers. An comprehensive index to articles in The Granville Times, published from 1880 to 1941 is available on this web site.

Old Colony Burial Ground pioneer re-enactment by Eric Evans Granville Historical Society volunteer.

The annual Old Colony Burial Ground walking tour features a number of its inhabitants who rise to the occasion each June and regale us with their stories. The volunteers who labor each summer emulate that tenacity to repair and reset the gravestones.

We have completed an oral history project with interviews and transcriptions of citizens to supplement the history of the last half-century. A number of stories from that project found their way into a reader' theatre presentation last June. An event of the Ohio Bicentennial, A Century of Voices from Ohio was performed by eleven Granville citizens, and reprised at the Ohio State Fair.

Oral History Project interviews with Howard Sachs and Carol Apacki.

We publish and distribute The Historical Times, a quarterly newsletter of Granville history. Back issues are available on this website. In current preparation, in time for the 2005 Bicentennial celebration is a new three volume history of Granville which will bring our written history up to date..

The membership fee is small - $25. for individuals, and $35. for a family membership (at one address)- but the reward is large: the knowledge that you are helping to preserve our heritage.

On this website please go the Membership, Registration, and fill out the form. We will mail you an application.
