Docent Training Program, 2009 - 2010

"Early Weapons in the Granville Historical Society Museum" with docent Lance Clarke, 11/2009

On Monday, September 14, 2009, the Granville Museum Consortium will begin the fall program for those interested in training for docent or other volunteer positions at its member museums: the  Denison Museum, Granville Historical Society Museum, and the Robbins Hunter Museum.  Sessions will be held every other Monday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. through May with many intriguing subjects scheduled for discussion and presentation, field trips to regional museums, and guest talks by local and regional experts.

The Docent program  began in the fall of 2008 and attracted about 18 participants.  This year’s classes will include those same people and welcome new volunteers.  This is an opportunity to broaden one’s knowledge of art and of history, not just of Granville, but internationally, as well.  Last year’s program included study of the American Museum Society’s Docent Manual, covering many topics which are pertinent to the job.  Each session also focused on one aspect of whichever museum was hosting the event.  Some topics included “Twentieth Century Korean Ceramics,” “Greek Revival Architecture,” “Photography of Clarence White in the Collection of the Robbins Hunter Museum,” as well as a tour of the Newark Earthworks.  Each docent is expected to give, in return, one day per month to one of the museums.
